Like many people, I am often guilty of rushing past the west shore of Loch Lomond on as I push on to the Highlands on the busy A82. I was recently lucky enough to stay at in the picturesque village of Luss. Here quaint cottages, historic churches, riverside walks and the bonnie bonnie banks of the loch itself are all part of the charm. As are handicrafts and the fine Scottish goods on sale in the General Store.
Superb Self Catering Accommodation Managed by Luss Estates
For me, though, the highlight of my visit was the chance to stay in the self-catering River Cottage – one of five holiday cottages managed by the Loch Lomond Arms Hotel. Located on the edge of the village and right on the banks of the river, River Cottage was perfect for our family of five with two large ensuite bedrooms, a spacious lounge/dining area, a cosy TV room and an expansive garden. Purpose-built as a holiday home, the cottage was luxurious in an understated way. It also had a big well equipped kitchen and plenty of games and books for all the family.
Opting to eat out (rather than in) for our evening meals, we headed for the Loch Lomond Arms Hotel. The decor in both the restaurant and bar seating area – a fusion of contemporary decor and tartan touches – married with the modern Scottish menu itself. Here Oban landed scallops, Argyll smoked salmon and Gigha Halibut were all just example of the produce that is sourced as locally as possible. There was even Luss Estates venison.
After this life-affirming visit to Luss, you can be sure that I won’t just be rushing past next time that I am on the A82 and neither should you.
