James Bond Returns to Scotland in Skyfall

Eilean Donan Castle

Bond, James Bond may be English these days, but the real James Bond’s dad was Scottish and, of course, the greatest ever Bond was a Scot. And no Roger Moore is not Scottish!

So we at InsiderScotland are claiming the world’s most famous spy as one of our own and we are glad to see that he is coming home for his latest adventure in Skyfall.

Bond is more travelled than us after a lifetime as travel writers, but like us he has always had a soft spot for his native land. Bond just cannot resist the lure of the Highlands.

This is not the first time, of course, that the Bond franchise has travelled north to shoot some key scenes. Who can forget Eilean Donan Castle starring in the ‘World is Not Enough’ or the nuclear submarine base at Faslane in ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’.

Bond Returns to the Highlands in Skyfall

Bond and Skyfall’s director Sam Mendes both love Scotland so it was natural that the epic drama of Glencoe should feature so spectacularly in this latest instalment of the saga. Bond’s father in Fleming’s novel actually hailed from Glencoe.

The White Corries in Glencoe are looking at their mean and moody best as Mr Bond, Dame Judy and, of course, an Aston Martin DB5 survey them.

Here is a wee link to the making of the Glencoe scenes and that car http://www.reelscotland.com/bond-watch-the-aston-martin-db5-in-scotland

The crew were said to have been ‘blown away’ by Glencoe and we are sure that they don’t just mean the baleful Scottish weather! Glencoe’s harsh landscapes were the perfect foil for some great sweeping setpieces and for a denouement dash across the sodden moors where once redcoats and Highland clansmen waged their own ferocious battles.
