One of Europe’s Liveliest, Trendiest and Most Creative Cities
Even some Scots still labour under anachronistic images of Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, as a wasteland of rusting shipyards, tough detectives and spiralling crime. The reality today is that the city has picked itself up over the last couple of decades to emerge as one of Europe’s liveliest, trendiest and most creative cities, a bustling hub where the museums offer free entry, fashion is a way of life and the nightlife buzzes late into the night. Those who have not visited for a while are often shocked by changes that have completely transformed the city. Glaswegians have always been a passionate, spirited people and in the 1980s they set about turning things around, rejuvenating the city centre and restoring many of the city’s finest Victorian and Georgian buildings.
Reputation for Friendliness
Glasgow newly formed tourist board was quick to dispel negative images and capitalised on the city’s reputation for friendliness with the famous ‘Glasgow’s Smiles Better’ campaign. Since then Glasgow has been honoured as both a European City of Culture and a UK City of Architecture and Design. The nation’s largest metropolis has recently successfully re-branded itself ‘Scotland with Style’, a powerhouse of cutting edge fashion, design and culture. Throw in fierce football rivalry, raucously energetic nightlife, the upcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games and enough sights to fill a month and it is no wonder that Glasgow is one of Europe’s fastest growing city break destinations.
